It's a high-risk gambit for the Florida governor, Republican strategists said. They insist Newsom could be a presidential contender as early as next year, though the governor has pledged to stand behind Biden's bid. "Ron DeSantis looks forward to sharing the stark contrast between his vision to revive our nation and Newsom's blueprint for failure," DeSantis campaign manager James Uthmeier said in an email. Nathan Click, a Newsom adviser, said his team was "shocked" when DeSantis agreed to the California governor's proposal to debate. The Trump campaign did not comment on the debate.

Trump, according to aggregates of national opinion polls, holds about a 50-percentage-point lead over her, with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also in the mix. Trump also has large leads in early Republican nominating states such as Iowa and New Hampshire. The polls show her tied with DeSantis in Iowa and surpassing him in New Hampshire. Should Haley's rise continue, she would likely face a full onslaught of attacks from the Trump campaign, pro-Trump social media influencers, and related super PAC spending groups. A Trump spokesperson did not respond to questions about whether the campaign would soon turn its attention to Haley.

Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally in Claremont, New Hampshire, U.S., November 11, 2023. The unprecedented legal turmoil has prompted questions about what would happen to Trump's campaign if he was convicted or jailed. Asked in an interview with Reuters whether he would still support Trump if he were convicted, Marcus replied, "I think so. "I never discussed his legal fees or his legal problems," Marcus said, adding that Trump was "very happy" about his support. Marcus said he thought Trump was a "fixer" who would be beneficial to the U.S. economy and strong on Middle East foreign policy.

"If President Trump wins Iowa here, I think it's going to be awfully hard to make the case that you can beat President Trump. Recent polls have shown Trump with about a 30-percentage-point edge in Iowa over DeSantis and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley. As he has before, Vander Plaats in the interview denied any connection between the funds and his support.

Vivek Ramaswamy, a brash multimillionaire former biotech executive, took a swipe at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over his cowboy boots, echoing speculation the shoes contain hidden lifts to boost his height. Five Republican candidates took part in Wednesday's debate. Trump allies have relentlessly hammered DeSantis over his cowboy boots, suggesting that DeSantis has hidden lifts inside them. DeSantis has said the boots are standard boots from Lucchese, a Texas-based western style shoe maker. Haley, who clashed with Ramaswamy several times during Wednesday's debate, corrected him, saying she actually wears five-inch heels.

"You might want to take care of your family first," he told Haley, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and a former governor of South Carolina. "Leave my daughter out of your voice," Haley shot back, adding under her breath, "You're just scum." It was not the first time Haley, a foreign policy hawk, and Ramaswamy, an anti-interventionist on foreign conflicts, have clashed over TikTok. Haley is vying with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to become the top challenger to runaway favorite Donald Trump in the Republican nominating contest. Ramaswamy, a relative unknown at the start of the year, gained buzz earlier this year but appears to have since lost momentum.

"I seeded my campaign with capital because I had to," Phillips, 54, told Reuters in an interview on the sidelines of an event at Manny's, a meeting space in San Francisco. "I will be in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and I'll be going to New York and Chicago, and Miami and larger cities to raise resources and campaign," Phillips said. Phillips said he did not know exactly how much he had raised since launching his campaign. "I think Joe Biden is a good man but he's been doing this for 50 years," Phillips told a crowd of several dozen in San Francisco. Miriam Adelson listens to Republican U.S. presidential candidate and former U.S. President Donald J. Trump during the Republican Jewish Coalition Annual Leadership Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S. October 28, 2023. The previously unreported meeting during a gathering of Republican Jewish donors is likely a positive sign for Haley given Adelson's status as one of the pre-eminent Republican donors. Israeli-born Adelson also met with Trump in Las Vegas over the weekend. It was not immediately clear what other presidential candidates, if any, Adelson met. Sheldon Adelson, who died in 2021, headed the casino company Las Vegas Sands Corp (LVS.N).

Support for Israel is a hallmark of American Republican politics. DeSantis did not go after Trump directly as he also vowed to support Israel. Brooks said RJC donors separately spent between $50 million and $60 million on the 2020 election cycle.

REUTERS/Steve Marcus Acquire Licensing RightsLAS VEGAS, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence ended his cash-strapped presidential campaign on Saturday, after struggling for months to convince Republican voters he was the best alternative to the man he once served with unswerving loyalty, Donald Trump. "To the American people I say: This is not my time," Pence told attendees at the Republican Jewish Coalition donor conference in Las Vegas. Pence gambled that Republican primary voters would reward him for following the U.S. Constitution rather than obeying Trump, who wanted him to overturn the 2020 election results. In several past elections, former vice presidents who have competed to become the White House nominee have succeeded, including Republican George H.W.

Puck, a digital media group, reported this month that Musk had recently attended a fundraiser in Silicon Valley hosted by prolific SPAC investor Chamath Palihapitiya. Asked about whether Musk could donate to him, Ramaswamy said "my only discussions with Elon have been about... cultural direction for the country." Florida governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis has also been seen to be courting Musk, whom Forbes says is the world's richest man with an estimated $222 billion in wealth.

LAS VEGAS, Oct 28 (Reuters) - U.S. Republican presidential candidates including frontrunner Donald Trump will address major Republican Jewish donors in Las Vegas on Saturday at a gathering that will seek their unequivocal commitment to wiping out Palestinian Hamas militants. A pro-DeSantis super PAC has attacked Haley on the Israel front, claiming she supports resettling refugees from Gaza in the United States. The RJC's Brooks said he was sure Trump would show "further commitment" to Israel on Saturday. To be sure, Israel is unlikely to be an election-defining issue and Republican voters are warier of foreign conflicts. "The growing isolationist movement in our party is dangerous," said Levine, who is supporting Senator Tim Scott and also likes Haley.

"That is his super power," said David Kochel, a Republican strategist not affiliated with any 2024 presidential campaign. Both campaigns use other accounts to raise money known as joint fundraising committees. Trump's campaign previously said it raised over $45 million in the third quarter, without giving details of how much joint fundraising raised and how much the joint committee spent raising that money. The Trump campaign didn't respond to requests for details about fundraising by the joint committee. Biden's camp had previously said his campaign, the Democratic Party and their joint fundraising committees raised a combined $71 million.

Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump waves at the crowd after speaking during a 2024 presidential campaign rally in Dubuque, Iowa, U.S. September 20, 2023. After spending roughly $1 million on anti-Trump ads in Iowa, the Republican Accountability PAC, for example, concluded in August their money wasn't making a difference. "We have stopped spending money in the primary. Continuing to spend on the primary is essentially a waste of money, said Reed Galen, co-founder of the anti-Trump Lincoln Project. Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump, said "no amount of Never Trump money" could match the enthusiasm Trump is generating among grassroots voters.

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) speaks as former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum listen at the first Republican candidates' debate of the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S. August 23, 2023. Haley, U.N. ambassador in Trump's administration, said the curtains had been bought during the previous Obama administration, and told Scott to "do your homework." before the exchange devolved into cacophony with the two candidates, joined by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, talking over one another. The New York Times in 2018 reported that $52,701 had been spent for "customized and mechanized curtains" for the residence. The article said plans to buy the curtains were made in 2016, before Trump took office.

It also shows the despair of some Republican establishment donors looking for a viable candidate who is not Trump. Reuters also spoke to a half dozen Haley donors, advisers to donors, and even supporters of other candidates who said more donors are looking at Haley. The Haley campaign did not respond to requests for comment about donor support. Even if more donors do line up behind Haley, it may be in vain, as so many Republican voters appear set on Trump. Rob Godfrey, a Republican strategist who advises some donors, said he has also seen an uptick in support for Haley in South Carolina.

"The question is: does Lachlan Murdoch want to have a positive relationship with former President Donald Trump? Vander Plaats and his group are leaders in the state’s Christian conservative movement, which has enormous political influence in Iowa. “It’s a lot more money” than you typically see allocated in Iowa, said Steffen Schmidt, an emeritus political science professor at Iowa State University who studies political spending in the state. “We endorsed Rick Santorum and he stormed to a caucus victory due to our base of supporters,” Vander Plaats wrote. DeSantis was seen as a major threat to Trump at the beginning of the year but his campaign has been flagging in recent weeks. Trump has been indicted twice this year, and his poll numbers in the Republican presidential nomination race keep going up. Still, Trump dominates the Republican field, and his lead has grown stronger since the criminal charges. The problem for DeSantis and his other rivals is they have not yet worked out a way to counter a frontrunner who is facing multiple criminal charges. DeSantis has shied away from attacking Trump over the indictments, out of fear of alienating the Republican base.
